What is bloating?Bloating is explained as a trapped gas in your stomach that makes you feel like you're carrying an inflated balloon around in your stomach, causing abdominal pressure and heaviness. It's a common problem that affects 10% to 25% of the world's population. This problem is often disregarded because many people assume that bloating is caused by their food. Functional gastrointestinal disorders, such as functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional constipation, can give rise to bloating. When the reason for bloating cannot be determined, this is known as functional bloating.
Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGID), also known as Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction, are a group of chronic digestive system disorders in which the gastrointestinal tract seems normal on examination but doesn't work properly. FGIDs are common over the world, affecting 4 out of every 10 persons to varying degrees.
What is functional constipation?A gastrointestinal condition that predominantly affects the large bowel of the colon. It is characterised as an irregular bowel habit or problem with bowel motions that occurs for no apparent structural or organic reason. It's a chronic issue, which indicates the problem has been present for at least 6 months. Young children and older persons are more likely to be affected.
As opposed to occasional constipation, everyone may experience it when they change their lifestyle. Travelling, eating specific foods, and taking certain drugs are just a few examples. When you return to your regular schedule, it will go away. What is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?Irritable bowel syndrome is a type of functional gastrointestinal disorder that manifests as a set of symptoms affecting the digestive system. IBS is quite widespread in Malaysia, with up to 14% of the population suffering from it. One of the most common conditions found in gastroenterology clinics is this one.
Symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhoea/constipation, all of which have a negative impact on the patients' quality of life. These tend to come and go throughout time, lasting days, weeks, or even months at a time. What is functional dyspepsia (indigestion)?Functional dyspepsia, also known as non-ulcer dyspepsia, is a type of chronic indigestion that has varied degrees of impact on daily activities. It's usually caused by a meal, and it can be a real ache, but it can also feel like heartburn, bloating, or nausea. In Malaysia, the prevalence of dyspepsia is estimated to be between 15% and 25%.
If you have a collection of symptoms that are particularly related to the upper gastrointestinal tract but have no evident cause, you may have functional dyspepsia.
